Spirituality at St James

Spiritual Development at St James Church of England Primary School
Children are at the heart of our Christian motto – 'Let Your Light Shine' - Matthew 5:16
'Let all that you do be done in love.' – 1 Corinthians 16:14
At St James, spirituality lies at the heart of our vision and daily life as a church school. We believe that spiritual development helps children explore the meaning and purpose of life and deepen their understanding of themselves, others, the world and God.
Spirituality is not about becoming more spiritual, but about growing in awareness of the spirituality already within us. As Professor Ursula King explains:
“Spirituality is about our relationships with ourselves, our family, friends, those around us, to God and to all of creation.”
At St James, spirituality influences every aspect of school life. Through our curriculum, relationships and experiences, we support children in developing a sense of awe, wonder, curiosity and reflection.
Spirituality through our School Values
Our Christian value of Love underpins our spiritual development. Through our values, we encourage children to:
Let Your Light Shine
Children grow in confidence, self-worth and identity, recognising their unique gifts and talents.
Opportunities for All
Children explore the world with curiosity and imagination, asking questions about life, faith and meaning.
Value One Another
Children develop empathy, compassion and respect for people of all faiths, cultures and beliefs.
Enriching Education
Children encounter moments of awe and wonder through learning, creativity, nature and reflection.
Through these values, we aim to help every child live life in all its fullness.
Mirrors, Windows and Doors
At St James, we nurture spirituality using the Windows, Mirrors and Doors approach.

Mirrors – Reflection
Children reflect on their own experiences, feelings and beliefs. Children are given opportunities to reflect on their experiences; to meditate and reflect on life’s big questions and to consider some possible answers.

Windows – Encounter
Children are given opportunities to look out onto the world and experience life in new ways. They consider life’s big questions and explore the perspectives of others. They explore beauty, mystery and challenge through learning, nature, creativity and faith stories.

Doors – Response
Children respond creatively and thoughtfully. They are encouraged to live out their values through kindness, actions, creativity and service to others.
Spirituality within RE
Our RE curriculum, delivered through Discovering RE, provides rich opportunities for spiritual development. Through exploring world religions and worldviews, children:
- Encounter stories, beliefs and practices from different faiths
- Reflect on big questions about life, meaning and belief
- Develop respect for people from different faiths and cultures
- Consider how beliefs influence actions and ways of living.
This supports our diverse school community in learning with and from one another, building understanding and respect.
Collective Worship
Collective Worship is a special time when our school community comes together to reflect, pray and explore our Christian values.
Through worship, children are given opportunities to experience moments of stillness, reflection, gratitude and awe. Worship encourages children to think about how our school value of Love can be lived out in everyday actions.
Collective Worship may include:
- Bible stories and Christian teachings
- Prayer and quiet reflection
- Music and singing
- Pupil participation and leadership
- Opportunities to reflect on global and community issues
Children are invited to reflect on their own beliefs while respecting the beliefs of others within our diverse community.
These shared moments help children develop spiritually by encouraging them to pause, reflect and consider how they can make a positive difference in the world.
Spirituality in Everyday School Life
Spiritual development is woven throughout the life of St James through:
- Collective worship
- Reflective moments in lessons
- Outdoor learning and connection with nature
- Creative arts and imagination
- Relationships built on love and respect
- Opportunities to show kindness and serve others
Through these experiences, we help children grow in a sense of awe and wonder, enabling them to better understand themselves, others and the world around them.
