Intent
At Saint James CE Primary School, we aim to foster a love of language learning and cultural awareness through the teaching of Spanish. By following the Language Angels scheme, we provide a structured, engaging and progressive curriculum that encourages curiosity, enjoyment and confidence in using a new language. We want children to see language learning as an exciting opportunity to connect with the wider world, while also valuing and respecting the many languages and cultures represented within our school community. Our intent is for children to develop the skills to speak, listen, read and write in Spanish at an age-appropriate level, building strong foundations that will inspire them to continue learning languages beyond KS2.

Implementation
Children in Years 3–6 receive Spanish lessons on a weekly basis, delivered through the Language Angels scheme to ensure clear progression and consistency. Lessons are interactive and practical, prioritising oral and aural skills to immerse pupils in the language. Vocabulary and structures are revisited and built upon over time to enable children to express ideas, hold simple conversations and respond with increasing accuracy and confidence. Teachers make use of songs, games and written tasks to engage learners and support the four key skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Progression is carefully mapped across year groups to ensure children build a secure knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.

Impact
Children at Saint James CE Primary leave KS2 with a foundation in Spanish that prepares them for further language learning in secondary school. They are able to understand and use key vocabulary and phrases with growing accuracy, demonstrating confidence in both spoken and written Spanish. More importantly, pupils show enthusiasm and curiosity for languages, recognising the value of communication and cultural understanding in a diverse world. Our MFL curriculum develops their cultural capital by broadening their global outlook and deepening their appreciation of different languages and traditions.
